How Long After Tint Can I Roll My Windows Down?
At Least 72 Hours. Full Cure in 30 Days.

Rayno's 72 hours and 30 days, why new film looks hazy, what a Chicago winter changes, and the rear defroster lines.

Wait at least 72 hours after tint before you roll your windows down: that is the instruction from Rayno, the maker of the film Tint Starz installs. In all, the film takes 30 days from the install to fully dry and cure, so 72 hours is the minimum for the windows, not the end of the cure.

Both numbers are Rayno’s, from the care instructions on its warranty terms page, read October 2026. Those instructions give no separate winter figure. Rayno window tint covers the Rayno films the shop installs.

Why wait 72 hours to roll the windows down?

Because the film is still drying. Window film goes on with moisture behind it, and Rayno says the film takes 30 days to fully dry and cure. Rayno’s instruction is to keep the windows up for at least 72 hours of that. Count from the install, not from the next morning.

Seventy-two hours is Rayno’s minimum, so waiting longer is never the mistake. The catch is daily life: the drive-through window, the parking garage gate, the ticket machine. Plan the three days around them, and ask the installer at pickup if you are unsure when the windows can go down.

Why does new tint look hazy?

Because of the moisture used to install it. Rayno says a hazy look during the 30 days the film takes to fully dry and cure is normal: it is moisture from the install, and it clears as the film dries. Let it dry, and leave it alone while it does.

Leaving it alone means no abrasive pads or cleaners on the glass and no peeling or scrubbing at the edges. If a window still looks hazy after the 30 days, call the shop.

How long does tint take to cure in a Chicago winter?

Plan on the long end of Rayno’s 30 days. Rayno’s care instructions give 30 days for the film to fully dry and cure, with no separate winter figure. Cold slows drying, so a car tinted in a Chicago January should get the whole month before you judge the haze.

While the film cures, and after, Rayno’s care rules are short:

Winter adds ice to that list. Window film goes on the inside of the glass, so an ice scraper on the outside never touches it; clear the outside the way you always have. The inside is where the film is, so keep the scraper off it, and Rayno’s rules apply there: no abrasive pads, abrasive cleaners or industrial strength glass cleaners on a tinted window, and no peeling or scrubbing at the edges. Ask the installer at pickup how to clear inside frost and when to use the rear defroster on new film.

Does tint go over the rear defroster lines?

Yes. Window film goes on the inside of the glass, and the defroster lines on the back glass are on the inside too, so new film lies over them. Rayno’s care instructions do not mention the defroster, so when to switch it on over new film is a question for the installer at pickup.

Old film is the delicate part. Taking it off means working film and adhesive off the same surface the lines sit on, so removal takes care near them. If the film on your back glass is peeling, bubbled or purple, call the shop with your year, make and model.

Tint removal runs $80 to $150, depending on the film’s condition and how much adhesive stays on the glass. If the work grows once it starts, the shop shows you with photos or a video call and confirms the price before going on.

Why a December install is fine

The install happens indoors. Every car is tinted inside the shop’s bay on Oakton Street, by appointment, Monday to Saturday 9 to 6, never in a driveway or a parking lot. The wind and the snow stay outside while the film goes on.

What winter changes is on your side of pickup. The 72 hours with the windows up stay the same; plan on the long end of Rayno’s 30 days for the film to dry.

Is window tint worth it in winter?

Yes, for glare and UV. S5 and S9 ceramic cut low-sun, snow and wet-road glare without going darker, stay optically clear at night and, by Rayno’s figures, block 99.9 percent of UV in every month of the year. Carbon blocks 99 percent. Both ceramics survive Chicago winters with no purple and no bubbling.

Winter sun stays low in the sky. On the morning drive it lands at eye level, and fresh snow throws it back from both sides of the road. Ceramic cuts that glare without moving you to a darker shade.

UV reaches you through the glass in January too, so the 99.9 percent block works all winter, and the infrared rejection pays off in July. Ceramic window tint puts S5 and S9 side by side.

Questions

Can you get window tint in the winter?

Yes. Tint Starz tints every car indoors, in its bay on Oakton Street, by appointment. Rayno's care instructions say to keep the windows up for at least 72 hours and allow 30 days for the film to fully dry and cure. Cold slows drying, so in winter plan on the long end of those 30 days.

The warranty page has Rayno's cure and care steps in full.

Is it normal for new window tint to look hazy?

Yes. Rayno, the maker of the film Tint Starz installs, says new film takes 30 days to fully dry and cure, and a hazy look in that time is normal. The haze is moisture from the install, and it clears as the film dries. Cold slows drying, so in a Chicago winter give it the full 30 days.

Can I scrape ice off tinted windows?

Yes, on the outside. Window film goes on the inside of the glass, so an ice scraper on the outside never touches it. Inside, Rayno's care rules allow no abrasive pads, abrasive cleaners or industrial strength glass cleaners on treated windows, and no peeling or scrubbing at the edges. Ask the installer how to clear inside frost.
