Tint Starz installs two ceramic window tints from Rayno’s Phantom series at 837 Oakton St Unit C in Elk Grove Village: S5 Premium Ceramic and S9 Highest Performance Ceramic. S9 carries a lifetime warranty and S5 a warranty of 2 years, and Javi and Tony install every car by appointment.

The shop sells them as All-Season Ceramic, because a car in Chicago needs its film to work in January as much as in July.

All-Season Ceramic

What ceramic window tint does in a Chicago winter

In winter the sun sits low. It comes in at eye level on the morning drive and bounces off the snow on both sides of the road. After dark, headlights flare off wet pavement. Ceramic cuts that glare without going darker, so the front doors can stay at a shade Illinois allows and still help.

Night is the second test. S5 and S9 stay optically clear after dark. Cheap film hazes, and haze is hardest to see through at night, when you most need clear glass.

Glare, UV, privacy, all year. Heat too, in July.

S5 Premium Ceramic
53 to 72% infrared rejection, depending on shade. 99.9% UV.
S9 Highest Performance Ceramic
91 to 93% infrared rejection, across Rayno's published shades. 99.9% UV.

S5 or S9: which ceramic fits your car?

Pick S5 for ceramic’s glare control and UV block at the lower price, or for a 30 percent shade on the rear. Pick S9 if the car sits in the sun all day, or if you want strong infrared rejection without dark glass. On a sedan, S5 starts at $330 and S9 at $400. The Rayno S5 vs S9 guide compares the two shade by shade.

S5 Premium Ceramic

S5 is rated 53 to 72 percent infrared rejection, and where it lands in that range depends on the shade. It blocks 99.9 percent of UV and comes in six shades: 50, 35, 30, 20, 15 and 5 percent.

It is the only one of the three films with a 30 percent shade. In Illinois, 30 is the darkest rear shade that still lets the front doors take film, at 50 percent or lighter.

S9 Highest Performance Ceramic

S9 is rated 91 to 93 percent infrared rejection across Rayno’s published shades, and 99.9 percent UV in each of them. It comes in 50, 35, 20, 15 and 5 percent. Tint Starz also stocks S9 in 70 and 12, which no other film comes in, and Rayno publishes no figure for either.

Because its rating sits in that narrow range, S9 at 50 percent on the front doors is still rated 92 percent. That suits a car that spends the day in an open lot, or a driver who wants the front glass light.

Teslas take ceramic only, S5 or S9, and the Tesla window tint page shows what each package covers. To see a shade before you choose, the tint shades preview shows each one and where Illinois allows it.

Pick the film first and the shade second. The film sets most of the infrared rejection. The shade sets privacy, how much light you have at night and what Illinois allows on the front doors.

All three films are Rayno’s, and the Rayno window tint page names the exact film behind every starting price, with Rayno’s color and fade tests and its care steps.

Film comparison

How do you judge the highest quality window tint?

By three numbers in writing: infrared rejection, UV blocked and the warranty length. Every maker publishes its own figures, measured its own way, so compare them film by film. Tint Starz installs Carbon, S5 and S9, all Rayno films. The comparison below sets Rayno’s infrared figure for each published shade beside the other makers’ own figures.

Quality is also the install. Every film goes on inside the shop on Oakton Street, by Javi or Tony, never in a driveway; only detailing comes to you, through mobile detailing.

Three films. The numbers side by side.

Other makers, in their own words

  • XPEL PRIME XR PLUSUp to 96 percentInfrared rejection at one wavelength, 1025 nm (92 percent on the 70 shade). XPEL's broader infrared energy figure, 780 to 2500 nm, is up to 70 percent. Published by XPEL, read October 8, 2026. Source
  • 3M Ceramic IR SeriesUp to 95 percentInfrared rejection as stated on the product page, which does not give the wavelength range next to the figure. Published by 3M, read October 8, 2026. Source
  • LLumar IRX Series61 percent / 88 percentNo single headline figure. Per shade, the best IRX shade lists 61 percent infrared energy rejection and 88 percent selective infrared rejection, both over 780 to 2500 nm on 6 mm clear glass. Published by LLumar, read October 8, 2026. Source

Makers measure infrared rejection in different ways, so these figures are not a ranking. Ask any shop which wavelength range its number covers.

Is ceramic worth it in Chicago?

Yes, if you drive the car all year. The glare, night clarity and UV case above holds in every month, and July adds infrared rejection on top. Carbon starts at $240 on a sedan and S5 ceramic at $330, and the step up brings 99.9 percent UV block and a warranty of 2 years against no warranty on Carbon.

Carbon is the entry film and comes in 35 and 5 percent. If the lowest price decides it, Carbon starts at $200 on a coupe, installed by the same two installers. The guide to ceramic vs carbon vs dyed tint in a Chicago summer compares the three films by the numbers.

Doing it once matters. Film that turns purple or bubbles has to come off, and removal runs $80 to $150 before the second install even starts. Tint removal covers that case.

Questions

What is ceramic window tint?

Ceramic window tint is film made with ceramic rather than metal, so it rejects infrared and blocks UV without signal interference. Tint Starz installs two from Rayno's Phantom series: S5, rated 53 to 72 percent infrared rejection depending on shade, and S9, rated 91 to 93 percent infrared rejection across Rayno's published shades. Both block 99.9 percent of UV.

Starting prices for both films are on the window tint prices page.

Does ceramic tint interfere with phone or GPS signals?

No. Ceramic film causes no signal interference, unlike metallic film, so phone, GPS and radio signals reach the car the same way after the install as before it. That holds for both ceramic films Tint Starz installs, S5 Premium Ceramic and S9 Highest Performance Ceramic.

What is IR tint?

IR tint is window film rated for infrared rejection, the share of the sun's infrared it holds back. Both ceramics Tint Starz installs carry that rating: S5 is rated 53 to 72 percent depending on shade, and S9 is rated 91 to 93 percent infrared rejection across Rayno's published shades. Shade and infrared rejection are separate numbers.

Does ceramic tint block UV?

Yes. Both ceramic films Tint Starz installs, S5 and S9, block 99.9 percent of UV in every shade Rayno publishes. UV comes through car glass in winter as well as summer, so that protection for your skin and for the dashboard, seats and trim does not take months off.

What is the lightest ceramic tint you install?

70 percent S9 is the lightest, nearly clear, and Rayno publishes no figure for this shade. The lightest S9 with a published figure is 50 percent, rated 92 percent infrared rejection. On an Illinois registered car without the medical exemption, 70 is legal on the front doors unless aftermarket rear film is darker than 30 percent.

The lightest S5 shade is 50 percent. Both are on the tint shades page.
