Window Tint Warranty: What Is Covered, and by Whom.
Two Warranties, Read Apart.

The shop's warranty runs by film: lifetime on S9, 2 years on S5, no warranty on Carbon. Here is what to ask about any window tint warranty before you book.

A window tint warranty can come in two layers, the shop’s and the film maker’s, written by different companies, each with its own length, coverage and claim process. At Tint Starz, the shop’s own warranty runs by film: lifetime on S9, 2 years on S5, no warranty on Carbon. Its terms are on the Tint Starz warranty page. Read the two apart, and ask about both before any film goes on.

What does a window tint warranty cover?

It depends on whose warranty it is. A shop’s warranty and a film maker’s warranty come from different companies, and each sets its own coverage, length and claim process. One may answer for the film itself, the other for the way it went on, or one may answer for both. The written terms decide it.

That is why the useful question at any shop is not “is there a warranty?” but “which warranty, from whom, and for what?” A film defect is a fault in the film. An install defect is a fault in how the film went on. The two are different problems, and they can sit under different warranties held by different companies.

What is the shop’s warranty at Tint Starz?

The shop’s warranty depends on the film you choose: lifetime on S9, 2 years on S5, no warranty on Carbon. It is the shop’s own warranty, separate from anything the film maker publishes. What it covers and how to make a claim are on the Tint Starz warranty page.

What is the shop’s warranty at Tint Starz?
FilmThe shop’s warrantyStarting price, coupe
Carbonno warrantyfrom $200
S5 ceramic2 yearsfrom $250
S9 ceramiclifetimefrom $350

S5 and S9 are Rayno ceramic films. Each price is a starting price on a coupe or single-cab truck, for every side window plus the rear glass. A sedan starts at $330 in S5 and an SUV or truck at $400, and every starting price by vehicle is on window tint prices.

The warranty length follows the film. If the warranty weighs on the choice, compare the films themselves: ceramic window tint puts S5 and S9 side by side, with infrared rejection and UV for each.

What should you ask any shop about a window tint warranty?

Ask four things. Who stands behind an install defect, and who stands behind a film defect. Whether the film maker’s warranty needs paperwork or registration, and by when. Whether either warranty transfers to a new owner. Whether an install that breaks state window film law voids the coverage. Get the answers in writing before the film goes on.

Who stands behind an install defect, and who stands behind a film defect?

The film maker made the film; the shop put it on. A fault in the film and a fault in the install may fall under different warranties. Ask which warranty answers for each, and whether a claim starts with the shop or with the film maker. If the answer is both, ask who looks at the film first.

Does the film maker’s warranty need paperwork or registration, and by when?

It can. Ask whether the film maker’s warranty depends on a step after the install, such as paperwork the shop completes or a registration with the film maker. If it does, ask who completes it, by when, and what you receive as proof that it was done. Keep that proof with your invoice.

Does the warranty transfer to a new owner?

It depends on each warranty’s terms: the shop’s warranty and the film maker’s warranty each set their own rule on a new owner. If you might sell the car while the film is still under warranty, ask before you book. The answer belongs in the written terms, not in a conversation at the counter.

Buying a used car that already has tint? Ask the seller for the paperwork: without it, you cannot tell whose warranty the film carried. Whether the film is legal on your car depends on the glass, not the papers, and Bought a car with illegal tint covers that question.

Does an install that breaks state window film law void the coverage?

It can, under some film makers’ terms. On an Illinois registered car without the medical exemption, front side film may be no darker than 35 percent when no rear window is darker than 35, 50 percent with rear film from 30 to just under 35 or factory tinted rear glass, and none with aftermarket rear film darker than 30.

The Illinois window tint law page works through every combination. At Tint Starz, every combination is checked against Illinois law before any film goes on, and the shop tells you if the one you want is not legal. A legal install keeps the question from coming up.

What should you check before you drive away?

Check that the invoice names the film and the shade, and that you have any warranty paperwork the film comes with. A missing film name or shade is easy to fix at the counter and hard to rebuild later. Keep the papers together for as long as the warranty runs.

New film needs care while it cures. Rayno’s cure and care steps are on the warranty page, under their own heading.

Where is the film installed?

Every film at Tint Starz goes on inside the shop at 837 Oakton St Unit C in Elk Grove Village, by appointment, Monday to Saturday 9 to 6, by Javi or Tony. From Des Plaines City Hall that is about 11 minutes outside rush hour, west on Oakton Street: see window tint in Des Plaines.

For an exact number, call the shop with the car and the film you are leaning toward, or send the same request through the quote form and the shop calls you back within minutes during shop hours. Ask about the warranty for that film at the same time.

Questions

What does window tint warranty cover?

It depends on whose warranty it is. The shop that installs the film and the company that makes it can each publish one, with its own coverage, length and claim process. At Tint Starz the shop's warranty runs by film: lifetime on S9, 2 years on S5, no warranty on Carbon. Its terms are on the warranty page.

Does illegal tint void the warranty?

It can, so ask before you book: some film makers write their warranty for installs that follow state window film law. On an Illinois registered car without the medical exemption, front side film may be 35 percent or lighter when no rear window is darker than 35. Tint Starz checks every combination against Illinois law before film goes on.

The rest of the rules are on the Illinois window tint law page.

What should I keep for a window tint warranty claim?

Keep the invoice naming the film and the shade, any warranty paperwork you are given, and a photo of both. The film, the install date and the shop are the first things a claim has to establish. The Tint Starz warranty, from no warranty on Carbon to lifetime on S9, has its terms on the warranty page.
