Windshield tint at Tint Starz comes two ways: a sunstrip along the top of the glass, and full windshield film in S5 or S9 ceramic. On a car registered in Illinois, the law allows only the sunstrip, unless the driver has the medical exemption.

What windshield tint Illinois allows: the top 6 inches

A sunstrip is a band of nonreflective film across the top of the windshield, reaching no more than 6 inches down from the top, which is where the AS-1 line usually falls. It is the windshield film Illinois allows on every Illinois registered car, and it starts at $60. The shop cuts the sunstrip no more than 6 inches from the top, per Illinois law.

It shades the strip of glass where the sun comes in over the visor, across the full width of the windshield. Everything below it stays as it was, so the road ahead looks the same.

The statute measures the 6 inches from the top of the glass, not from the AS-1 mark. It sets no darkness figure for the strip: the film has to be nonreflective and stay within those 6 inches. The guide can you tint your windshield in Illinois has the full rule, with the exemptions.

Full windshield tint, and who it is for

Full windshield film starts at $120 in S5 ceramic and $200 in S9. On a car registered in Illinois, the law allows film on the top 6 inches only. Full windshield film is for cars registered in another state or drivers with the medical exemption.

Subsection (a) of the statute allows nothing else on the windshield, clear film included, and subsection (a-10) bars installing what (a) prohibits.

Two kinds of cars sit outside subsection (a). Subsection (f) exempts a car properly registered in another state, though the state that registers it may set its own windshield rule. Subsection (g) exempts a car with the Illinois medical exemption, and (g-7) requires its distinctive plates or plate sticker to be on the car before any film goes on.

S5 is rated 53 to 72 percent infrared rejection, depending on shade, and S9 is rated 91 to 93 percent across Rayno’s published shades. Both block 99.9 percent of UV. S9 70, the lightest S9 the shop stocks, has no Rayno published figure.

So on an Illinois registered car, the film stays on the top 6 inches. A full windshield is for a car registered in another state or with the medical exemption, so check your registering state’s windshield rule before you book.

Glare and UV through the windshield

The windshield is the biggest piece of glass in front of you, and in winter the low sun sits right in it.

On a car that may carry full windshield film, registered in another state or with the medical exemption, S5 and S9 cut low-sun, snow and wet-road glare without going darker. Both stay optically clear at night, and both block 99.9 percent of UV year round.

On an Illinois registered car without the medical exemption, the sunstrip covers the top band only, and the rest of the windshield stays clear by law. The front side windows can carry ceramic as well. How dark they can go depends on the rear windows, and the Illinois window tint law page has the rule in full. To compare side window shades first, use the tint shades preview.

Tesla windshields

On a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, the windshield is an add-on to the Tesla package, in S5 or S9, priced on the Tesla window tint page. The rule does not change for a Tesla. On one registered in Illinois, film goes on the top 6 inches only, and full windshield film is for Teslas registered in another state or drivers with the medical exemption.

Prices

Adding the windshield to a tint job: starting prices.

The windshield is priced on its own, so a sunstrip can go on by itself or with the side windows. All-around tint, every side window plus the rear glass, starts at the prices below, and the window tint prices page has every starting price by vehicle and film.

Final price depends on the vehicle, film, coverage, condition and installation difficulty. Call us for an exact number.

Questions

What is the AS-1 line on a windshield?

The AS-1 line is a mark printed near the top edge of most windshields. In Illinois the limit for a tint strip is written as 6 inches down from the top of the windshield, which is where the AS-1 line usually falls. The statute measures from the top, not from the mark, so the 6 inches decide.

Is a windshield sun strip legal in Illinois?

Yes. Illinois allows nonreflective tinted film along the top of the windshield, as long as it reaches no more than 6 inches down from the top, which is where the AS-1 line usually falls. That strip is the only windshield film allowed on an Illinois registered car without the medical exemption. A sunstrip starts at $60.

How dark can a windshield strip be in Illinois?

Illinois sets no darkness figure for the windshield strip. The statute asks two things: the film must be nonreflective, and it must reach no more than 6 inches down from the top of the windshield. The front side window figures, 35 and 50 percent, apply to the windows next to the driver, not to the strip.

Can I tint my windshield if my car is registered in another state?

Illinois does not stop it. Cars properly registered in another state are exempt from the Illinois windshield rule under subsection (f)(2), so full windshield film is open to them, from $120 in S5 ceramic and $200 in S9. The state that registers the car may set its own windshield rule, so check it before you book.

Once the car is registered in Illinois, only the top 6 inches may carry film, unless it has the medical exemption. The Illinois window tint law page has the full rule.

Can I get full windshield tint with a medical exemption?

Yes, once the car carries the distinctive plates or plate sticker issued for the Illinois medical exemption. That needs a certified statement from a physician licensed in Illinois, kept in the car, renewed every 4 years and copied to the Secretary of State. Without it, an Illinois registered car may carry film on the top 6 inches only.

The installer keeps a copy of the statement before fitting the film. How to qualify is on the Illinois window tint law page.
