The windshield add-on in the table is full windshield film. On an Illinois registered car without the medical exemption, the law allows only nonreflective film on the top 6 inches of the windshield, which is where the AS-1 line usually falls, so the add-on is for cars registered in another state or drivers with the medical exemption. Windshield tint covers the legal top strip and the full windshield.

Model 3 tint: the film sets the rear glass

On a Model 3, S5 and S9 cover different glass. S5 covers every side window plus half of the rear glass. S9 covers every side window plus all of it, and it is the only way to film the full rear glass on a Model 3. The shop confirms exactly which glass your package covers before the price is final. Model Y tint: the film sets the infrared rejection

On a Model Y, both films cover the same glass: every side window plus the rear glass. The choice is performance.

S5 rejects 53 to 72 percent of infrared, depending on the shade you pick. S9 rejects 91 to 93 percent across Rayno’s published shades. Infrared is the part of sunlight you feel as warmth through the glass, and it is where the two films differ most.

Both block 99.9 percent of UV. The warranty is lifetime on S9 and 2 years on S5. S9 costs more than S5 on either model, and the table shows by how much.

Neither film causes signal interference, unlike metallic film, on a car that relies on GPS, cellular data and a phone key. Ceramic window tint compares S5 and S9 in full.

Shades, and what Illinois allows

S5 comes in six shades, from 50 percent down to 5. S9 comes in seven, from 70 percent down to 5, including a 12 percent shade only S9 offers. The tint shades page previews each shade on one sedan, with the films that stock it.

On a car registered in Illinois, the law is the same for a Tesla as for any other car, and the rear windows decide the front. With nothing behind the driver darker than 35 percent, the front side windows can take nonreflective film at 35 percent or lighter. With rear film from 30 up to just under 35 percent, or factory tinted rear glass, they must be 50 percent or lighter. Without the medical exemption, aftermarket rear film darker than 30 percent means no film on the front side windows.
